Even though breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t always come naturally. It can be challenging.
In addition to learning how to be a mom, you’re learning how to feed your new baby. What to Expect from a Consult
As a lactation consultant in private practice, Lori J. Isenstadt, IBCLC will provide the mother with a visual and hands on breastfeeding assessment. I will listen to your concerns, assess baby’s oral anatomy, your breast anatomy, and observe latch. A full feeding will be observed. During this feeding, latch and positions adjustments will be made as necessary with mother having plenty of opportunity to practice latching her baby on.
While your baby is feeding, questions will be answered regarding normal newborn breastfeeding behavior. Once feeding is complete, I will measure intake at breast using a Medela Baby Weigh scale.Based on observations noted during this consult, a lactation care plan will be emailed to you the same day of your consult. Our visits typically lasts 1 – 1 ½ hours.
Mothers generally feel a sense of relief knowing that they have met with an experienced professional who will be working with them to correct their breastfeeding problems. Typically any pain they have been suffering with, is greatly reduced by the end of their initial consult. As your lactation consultant I will give the mother a care plan which will further reduce their pain over a short time.
Mothers leave a consult feeling assured and confident in their ability to breastfeed their baby. They receive consistent, current and evidence based research regarding breastfeeding. Please see link for testimonials to read what other mothers have stated about their consult.
Support for the Breastfeeding Mother.
Once home with a new baby, parents often have numerous questions related to breastfeeding. Parents are encouraged to bring a list of written questions, which will be discussed during the course of the consult. The consult provides an excellent opportunity for you to receive current information in a relaxed atmosphere.
I know that mothers are most successful when they are able to receive continued help for a short time after the initial consult. For this reason, you are strongly encouraged to take full advantage of the excellent follow-up opportunities offered. Your case will remain open for 2 weeks after your initial consult. During this time you can call or email me for additional follow-up questions and to report progress. Approximately 85% of the problems are fixed in less than 2 weeks.
If you require additional help after 2 weeks, I will recommend that you schedule another appointment. We will work closely together and focus on the breastfeeding challenges you are still struggling with.Appointments are never rushed and all your concerns will be addressed.
A comprehensive report of your consult will be sent to your doctor, upon your request only. This will enable your doctor to be kept informed of your initial concern and of your progress.
