Even though breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t always come naturally. It can be challenging.

In addition to learning how to be a mom, you’re learning how to feed your new baby.

What to Expect from a Consult

As a lactation consultant in private practice, I provide you with a thorough, hands-on breastfeeding assessment. I’ll take the time to listen to your concerns, assess your baby’s oral anatomy and your breast anatomy, and observe a full feeding session.

During the feeding, I will make adjustments to latch and positioning as needed, giving you plenty of opportunity to practice latching your baby comfortably and effectively. I’ll also answer your questions about normal newborn breastfeeding behavior as they come up.

Once the feeding is complete, I’ll use a Medela Baby Weigh scale to measure your baby’s intake at the breast. Based on everything I observe during our consult, I’ll email you a personalized lactation care plan within 24 hours. Most visits last between 1 to 1½ hours.

I understand how relieving it can feel to meet with an experienced professional who truly listens and knows how to help. By the end of our initial consult, the pain you’ve been experiencing is typically greatly reduced. As your lactation consultant, I will provide you with a personalized care plan designed to continue relieving your discomfort and support your breastfeeding goals.

You’ll leave our visit feeling more confident and assured in your ability to breastfeed your baby. I offer consistent, up-to-date, evidence-based information to guide you every step of the way.

Support for the Breastfeeding Mother

Once you’re home with your new baby, it’s completely normal to have questions about breastfeeding. I encourage you to bring a written list of any questions you have—we’ll go over them together during your consult in a relaxed and supportive setting. This is a great time to receive clear, current information tailored to your needs.

I know that ongoing support in the early days can make all the difference. That’s why I offer follow-up support for two weeks after your initial consult. During this time, you’re welcome to reach out to me via email with updates or any additional questions. Most breastfeeding issues are resolved within this two-week window, although some challenges may take a bit longer to fully work through.

If you find that you need more help after those two weeks, we can schedule another appointment to continue working through any remaining challenges. Appointments are never rushed, and all your concerns will be fully addressed.

If you would like, I can also send a summary report of your consult to your doctor. This helps ensure your healthcare provider is informed about your breastfeeding journey and the progress you’re making.

Breastfeeding Support, Right When You Need It

Whether you’re preparing for breastfeeding during pregnancy or navigating the early days with your newborn, I’m here to help. I offer private lactation consultations in the comfort of your home—or virtually, if that’s easier for you.

You can schedule a prenatal consult to get ready before baby arrives, or take my online breastfeeding class (launching soon!) to build your confidence and know what to expect.

Already in the thick of it? I’ve helped hundreds of families with breastfeeding problems such as:

  • Low milk supply or oversupply
  • Latching difficulties
  • Painful breastfeeding
  • Engorgement
  • Suspected tongue-tie
  • Pumping questions
  • …and all those “is this normal?” moments

If you’re returning to work, we’ll make a plan together, so you feel ready and supported as a pumping and working mom.
